Politics May Divide, but Dad’s Consistency Unites—Here’s How

The ballots are counted, the pundits are quieting, and the yard signs are headed for recycling. Wherever you land on the results—cheering, groaning, or shrugging—one truth remains: your kids woke up this morning still needing dad.

“We have to … continue to work day in and day out to create the better society—for our children,” comedian Jon Stewart reminded us this week. Scripture said it first: “Let us not become weary in doing good” (Galatians 6:9). Elections come and go; a father’s call is daily.

The Gibraltar Factor

One dad described his father as “the Rock of Gibraltar in our family.” That picture echoes Jesus’ words about building on bedrock so storms can’t topple the house (Matthew 7:24-25). Your steady presence—emotionally, spiritually, physically—becomes the fixed point from which your children chart their adventures:

  • Security: They know where to run when the world feels unstable.
  • Direction: Your consistent values give them moral north.
  • Confidence: Because you show up, they dare to explore.

What Consistency Looks Like

  1. Predictable Character – Let your yes be yes and your no be no. Integrity anchors trust.
  2. Steady Schedule – Bedtime prayers, Saturday pancakes, Sunday worship. Rhythms create refuge.
  3. Faith on Display – Kids learn theology by watching dad forgive, repent, and rejoice.
  4. Calm Where It Counts – Political debates may spark around you; model James 1:19—quick to listen, slow to speak, slow to become angry.
  5. Neighbor Love in Action – Mow the lawn for the family with the opposite bumper sticker. Someday your child might hold a view you don’t share; practice unconditional welcome now.

Beyond the Vote: Being a Kingdom Citizen

Jesus calls us salt and light in every era. Start local: pray for leaders (1 Timothy 2:1-2), discuss issues through a biblical lens at the dinner table, and remind your kids that their ultimate King is un-electable—He reigns forever.

Dad Challenge: This week write a short note to a neighbor whose yard sign clashed with yours. Thank them for something specific (their holiday lights, friendly dog, etc.). Hand-delivered kindness teaches more civics than a thousand tweets.

Storm-Proofing Their Future

Elections test the national mood; they also test our discipleship. When your child remembers these days, let them recall not headlines but the hum of dad’s faith—steady, hopeful, and fiercely engaged in loving God and neighbor.

Questions to Consider

  • Where did you feel emotionally “wobbly” during the election season, and how might that have shown up at home?
  • What daily or weekly ritual could you start (or restart) that gives your kids a predictable point of connection?
  • How do your children hear you speak about people who disagree with you? What lesson are they absorbing?
  • In what practical ways can you model Kingdom citizenship that transcends party lines?
  • Which Bible verse anchors you when the culture feels chaotic, and how can you share its comfort with your family?
